ANOTHER DAY OF FIRSTS!

Miduk at Market Street

This was from Friday....I was too tired to write last night....

Introduced Miduk to chapstick this morning

First pair of winter gloves (ok well I don't know this for sure but I am assuming he has never had the need to wear winter gloves since he lives in tropical Indonesia!)

First time to see an acorn, play with a toy "torpedo" in the swimming pool, eat a grilled panini sandwich with salami and pepperoni, play a Wii video game.

Today Miduk really came out of his shell.  I'm not sure he was ever in one to begin with, but now it is obvious that he feels at home!  He goes around the house calling out for Kasey in the cutest voice, teasing with Wes, scolding Sugar, helping himself to a glass of milk, sitting with us on the sofa to watch TV.  He was Wesley's best buddy all day long.  They played soccer outside again, swam again (Miduk said "c'mon swimming Wes!), and played video games on the Wii.  My friend Kelly brought over a Wii video game player for us to use while Miduk is here.  OMG it is the best thing since sliced bread in my opinion!!!  It was nice that Miduk had something to keep him busy, and he really got into it! Thank you Kelly!  :)   Miduk is teaching Bahasa Indonesia language to Wes and he cracks up when Wesley pronounces the word wrong!  Wes brought home a pile of laundry to do, and when he put the clothes in the dryer he asked Miduk to push the start button but Miduk wouldn't do it!  I don't know if he is familiar with a dryer.  I'm sure they don't have one at his home.  I asked him if they have a refrigerator and he said no.  I asked Wesley to explain the whole shower routine again (I don't know why I'm so bothered by that because he IS clean) and this time Miduk was able to tell us that he turns it off and on to conserve water!  I never in a million years would have thought of that.  He said Mama Linley taught him that!

Today Shelby and Wes took Miduk on his first real outing other than the hospital and went to a grocery store called Market Street.  Wes said that Miduk pulled his jacket over his nose the whole time they were in there because he didn't like the smell!  He said it smelled like cheese and he hates cheese!  When they were checking out, he slapped Wes on the butt and pointed to the girl who was sacking the groceries and said "She's beautiful".  (and Wes confirmed that yes, she was "hot"!)  Too funny!

Tonight for dinner I made chicken fried steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and mango sticky rice for dessert.  Miduk ate that chicken fried steak as if he had never eaten before (he even helped me fry it), but he is NOT a gravy guy!  Just say no to cheese and now no to gravy! Oh and also NO to strawberry jam!  We are finding out his likes and dislikes.  During dinner I showed him a photo of the entire family on Shelby's side, and pointed out all the aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents.  He was very interested and then told us that he has 5 aunts, 5 uncles, and 30 cousins!  Wow I guess they all have big families.  Miduk has 4 older brothers and 1 younger sister.  The older brothers are age 25, 23, 22, and 21, and the little sister is 10.  She goes to school, while the brothers go to work.  He says one brother is a farmer and the others work at a coffee shop.  Miduk says he stays at home with his grandmother during the day.

Wes told Miduk to smile underwater!

  Playing a little soccer

Miduk is learning a lot about American ways and about our family, and we are also learning a lot about his life in Indonesia.  I am just so curious what the future holds for Miduk after he returns to his little village in Sumatra.  Right now I don't even want to think about that.
